Is it confidential?

Yes, your privacy is completely respected. Psychologists are legally bound to protect your privacy; confidentiality is required by professional conduct. Your information may only be disclosed by court order, by your request, or if there is risk of imminent harm to you or another.

What is the difference between a psychologist, a psychiatrist, a counsellor, and a psychotherapist?

Psychologists are trained in techniques to diagnose and treat a wide range of emotional, cognitive, and behavioural problems. Psychologists must complete a minimum of four years of university study in psychology, plus a minimum of two years supervised practice to become a registered psychologist in Australia.

Psychologists do not prescribe medication, and are experienced in evidence based treatements that may provide benefits without the need for medication. Psychiatrists complete six years of general medicine, plus a further specialty in psychiatry. Psychiatrists focus particularly on the medical treatment of psychological problems, and can prescribe medication.

Counsellors and psychotherapists in Australia are not regulated or registered, which means that the level of training involved varies with individuals from none to university study in counselling. Many counsellors provide skillful listening to clients’ personal problems, and provide helpful support and advice; some, however, have no training or qualifications at all
